The lions of Zone 3B which comprise the five lions clubs in Saint Lucia - Lions Club of Castries, Vieux Fort Lions Club, Piton Lions Club, Gros Islet Lions Club and Micoud Lions club, together with the Leo Club of Castries hosted the District Governor for sub-District 60B, Lion Lloyd Barker MFJ during the period September 10 to 13, 2011. The visit was to conduct the annual audit of the Clubs which is mandated by Lions International.

The District Governor’s visit coincided with the first Zone meeting for the lions’ fiscal year 2011 which was held on Saturday September 10, 2011 and hosted by the Vieux Fort Lions Club. At the Zone meeting the various club Presidents reported on the plans for the lions’ fiscal year, the challenges facing clubs and strategies identified. One common theme highlighted in the reports was that of membership growth and retention. Some of the strategies included extensive membership drives which required each member to not only identify one potential member but to bring in one member thus allowing membership to double by the end of the year in July 2012.

During the Audit the District Governor found that the clubs were not only operating in accordance with the guidelines provided by Lions International but had all submitted healthy plans that would ensure that the goals and objectives of Lions international, the District and the Zone are implemented effectively. Lion Lloyd Barker, MJF, urged the clubs to continue the work that is being undertaken in Saint Lucia and challenged them to concentrate on educational programmes to assist in fighting against those non-communicable diseases like diabetes and AIDS which are so prevalent in our Caribbean society.

One of the goals of the International President is to plant one million trees by the end of the lions’ fiscal year. The District Governor urged clubs in the Zone to ensure that our region and by extension Saint Lucia can participate in this and contribute to the preservation of the environment, given the vulnerability of our region to natural disasters.

During the visit the District Governor was able to pay a courtesy call on Her Excellency Dame Pearlette Louisy Governor General of Saint Lucia, who indicated that Lions should ensure that their programmes are geared towards encouraging young persons to become service minded.

He also visited the Saint Lucia Blind Welfare Association and the Fair Helen Adult Day Care Center in La Clery
