INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR OLDER PERSONS

CASTRIES LIONS OBSERVE DAY FOR OLDER PERSONS

On 14 December 1990, the United Nations General Assembly (by resolution 45/106) designated  October  1, the International Day of Older Persons.   The theme of the 2012 commemoration is “Longevity: Shaping the Future”. The themes focus on how healthy behaviours throughout life can help older men and women lead full and productive lives and be a resource for their families and communities.

In Observance of the day for older persons the members of the Lions Club of Castries joined with the members of the Club 60 of Castries to walk with the older folks.  The walk commenced on the Marchand field  at 6:30 am and culminated at the Marion Home for elderly.   After the walk  members spent time talking to the older persons about their experience.

The word from the United Nations General Secretary, Ban Ki-moon on this year's theme: "Longevity is a public health achievement, not a social or economic liability. On this International Day of Older Persons, let us pledge to ensure the well-being of older persons and to enlist their meaningful participation in society so we can all benefit from their knowledge and ability."
