On 24th December, 2013 Saint Lucia was impacted
by a Trough System with rainfall during
the night. The
Saint Lucia Met
Services reported171.1mm of rain
in the 24 hours ending at 8:50 a.m. Significant
damage was caused to
infrastructure – roadways
and bridges were washed
away. Damage to the
Agricultural Industry (Saint
Lucia’s mainstay) is estimated at about sixty percent (60%). The Lions
and Leos of Zone 3B worked with
the National Emergency Management
Organization to obtain a comprehensive assessment of the damage and to identify
needs.
The Lions and Leos of Zone 3B
received a combined grant from the District and Lions International to assist
the victims in the various communities where lions serve.
The Lions and Leos of Castries
teamed with the Lions of Gros Islet to meet the need of persons in the north of
the island. The team spent time
packaging the items and visited the various affected communities to distribute
the items. On one of the visits the
Lions and Leos got to share birthday cheer with a recipient who was celebrating
his fifty-third birthday. It is always a
pleasure when Lions and Leos can be of
service to the less fortunate and give selflessly of their time to assist in
times of Disaster.
Thanks to Lions Clubs
International, the District Governor and the Lions and Leos of Sub-District 60B
for their generous contribution to the people of Saint Lucia.
