The Annual Kids in Sight project undertaken by the Lions of Zone 3B in
partnership with the Saint Lucia Blind Welfare Association and the Lions
of Michigan took place between February 01 - 08, 2014. The Team
comprising Lions and Specialist visits Saint Lucia to perform corrective
surgery on a number children as well as screening and sight
preservation education. In addition workshops are held with the nurses
at the District Health Centers to provide them with insights into eye
screening. The Team's visit is also supported by the Government of
Saint Lucia as all surgeries are undertaken at the local hospitals free
of charge. The equipment brought in by the specialists remain at the
eye ward at Victoria Hospital, the island;;s main hospital This year
the Scope which is used to conduct the surgeries was brought in at a
cost of approximately $50,000 US. This was possible by grant funding
from Lions International as well as matching funds by the lions of Zone
3B. A detailed report on the visit will be submitted to the club
following the review meeting. The Castries club hosted the Team on
one of its clinic days at the Blind Welfare Association.
