DIABETES AWARENESS MOONLIGHT WALK

Today November 13, 2014, the Lions and Leos join in the implementation of another activity planned for the observance of Diabetes Awareness month. The moonlight walk organized by the Lions and Leos took participants through the city streets to the Multi-purpose Sports complex for a short formal ceremony. The walk was accompanied by the Cadet Corp band who played a rhythm to the chant that was developed by the planning Committee - " Always eat healthy defeat Diabetes Now; defeat, defeat defeat diabetes now" In addition participants used flashing lights to raise more awareness.
At the end of the walk there was a brief formal ceremony which was addressed by the Patron of the Association Dr Didier who highlighted the alarming rate of growth of the disease on the island. He noted that this was mainly due to lifestyles. There was testimony by persons living with diabetes. A very touching testimony was given by an eleven year old girl who has been living with diabetes from age 7. The evening concluded with Mr Clery, a local calypsonian singing a song composed for the occasion - Diabetes Can Kill you.
Thanks to Leo President Tonia for initiating the idea of the blue circle for lighting the candles and ensuring that this was done. Thanks to the many organizations and groups who contributed in making this Diabetes Awareness Walk a success.
