November
marks the observance of Diabetes Awareness month. As is customary the
Lions and Leos of Castries agreed to partner with the Saint Lucia
Diabetes and Hypertension Association in planning and implementing
activities for the month. The Leo President and Lions play an active
role on the planning Committee. This year the function of organizing
the walk to raise awareness was that of the Lions and Leos. The walk
with take place on November 13 and is an evening/moonlight walk, as opposed to morning.
To mark the commencement of the month the Leo Club of Castries wore
blue to the Business Meeting on November 01, 2015. The meeting was
addressed by a gentleman who has been living with diabetes for the past
ten years. He highlighted the dos and don’ts for persons living with
diabetes, the struggles and challenges of living with the disease; the
precautions that a young person should take to avoid diabetes. One
important point he noted is that we should know our blood sugar levels.
Above all, he indicated that we should ensure that when taking our
annual examinations that we should ask for the diabetes test to be done.
This was a very enlightening afternoon.
The Lions and Leos mounted a mini educational exhibition at the den and will be circulating information to friends, coworkers and family throughout the month.
On Sunday November 02 Lions and Leos who were not at the Yoplait walk joined the Association at the Church service to mark the commencement of activities.
The Program for the month include – Press Launch on November 05, radio and television talks, distribution of literature; Walk to heighten awareness on November 13; Healthy Breakfast and Health fair November 14 – World Diabetes Day. November 29 - Strutt for a Cause, the Association joins with Radio 100/HTS to host a fashion show to raise awareness. Leos and Lions will be strutting for Diabetes.
