On December 25, 2009 the members of the Lions Club of CAstries shared their Christmas lunch with the destitutes and underpriviledged persons in Castries.  A hot meal was served and Christmas goodies presented to the underpriviledged persons.

Lions Bring Christmas Cheer to Millet Combined School

On Saturday December 12, 2009, the members of the Lions Club of Castries (assisted by the members of the Leo Club of Castries) hosted a Christmas party for the students of the Millet Combined  School. The community of Millet was chosen as it was in that community that our late Lion Nick Armand had undertaken most of his community work and one which was identified as  having the greatest need.

Shine Your Light on Human Rights

On December 01, 2009 members of the Lions Club and Leo Clubs of Castries joined the National AIDS programme Secretariat in observance of World AIDS Day.

 

The Leo President Leo Jayeur Joseph addressed the gathering as the Youth Ambassador.  In her address she implored the young persons  to educate themselves about HIV/AIDS and do all in their power to protect themselves.  She noted that discrimination was hurtful and that by discriminating one would put the blood of someone else on their hands.   She  challenged parents not to make sex a taboo in their household today but to see themselves as the first teaches molding the young minds.  She implored the young persons to continue to let their lights shine.

The highlight of the evening was unveiling the quilt.  This quilt is being worked on by persons living with AIDS..  Each squares symbolizes  one  person who have contracted  the disease.

 

Be a light in someone's dark tunnel for you may never know when you may need someone to shine their light through your dark times. - so

Diabetes WAlk - 2009

On Saturday November 28, 2009 the members of the Lions Club of Castries together with the Diabetic and Hypertensive Association got busy with registration for the annual Diabetes Walk as well as conducting blood pressure and diabetes screening.

 

 Over one hundred participants were registered.  Although we run out of T-Shirts many  persons showed their  support and registered.

The proceeds from the registration was presented to  Mr George Eugene Executive Director of the Diabetic and Hypertensive Association.

On Sunday November 29 Hundreds turned out for the Annual Diabetes Fun Walk.

After the last pack of walkers had passed the  last water stop the team  of Lions and volunteers - ever environmentally conscious - walked the route collecting bottles

The Lions Club of Castries expresses its thanks and appreciation to the Saint Lucia Diabetic and Hpertensive Assocaitoin  and Super J for  partnering in the Walk against Diabetes and the many corporate sponsors. Congratulations to the members of the  Fund-raising Committee, Chaired by Lion Sharon Ephraim for a well executed  Dinner.   Our thanks go to Her Excellency Dame Pearlette Louisy, Governor General of Saint Lucia for  graciously agreeing to be our host, to the  many Corporate Sponsors and supporters  who attended  the Dinner as well as the other Clubs in the Zone - Gros Islet  and Vieux Fort Lions for their attendance.  Your contribution will assist our many Sight projects especially the Kids in Sight.

Breaking The Silence

Lions Clubs International Recognized at 20th World Diabetes Congress

OAK BROOK, IL, November  4, 2009 – Lions Clubs International recently earned honorable recognition for its outstanding service in diabetes from the International Diabetes Federation. At the 20th World Diabetes Congress, October 19-22, in Montreal, Canada, Professor Martin Silink, 2006-2009 president of the International Diabetes Federation, presented the award to Lions Clubs International during the General Council assembly of its more than 200 member associations representing more than 160 countries. The award recognizes Lions Clubs International formally as one of the prominent global leaders in humanitarian and community services, and for its consideration for diabetes as a growing global concern.

HIV /AIDS - Sensitization

On November 07, 2009 the Leo Club of Castries held an HIV/AIDS education workshop. The objective of the workshop was to sensitized and educate members on HIV/AIDS.  The work shop was facilitated by The Saint Lucia Planned Parenthood  Association. Lions Observe World Diabetes Day

 Lions and Leos participate in Health Fair to mark 
World Diabetes Day

In observance of World Diabetes Day the members of the Lions and Leo clubs of Castries joined the Saint Lucia Diabetic and Hypertensive Association  and its many partners  in mounting a men's health fair at the Dereck Walcott Square, Castries.The aim of the fair was to Unite with partners in the fight against Diabetes as it has been recorded that Saint Lucia has the highest rate of diabetes per capita.

Members of the Lions Club of Castries and the St Lucia Blind Welfare Association conducted eye screening.

The main sponsor of the annual Walk against Diabetes Super J   promoted healthy foods

The Lions and Leos undertook the Registration for the annual walk on November 29, 2009.

The Leos also participated in the exercise demonstration

The other partners Ministry of Health conducted Diabetes and hypertension testing and education

                                                       The highlight of the day was the presentation of a pair of new crutches to a diabetic who has been living with the disease  from age 29.  He had his left leg amputated at age 34.  His testimony to the audience was that your health is your responsibility - take control.
