Diabetes Awareness Day Health Fair

The Lions and Leos of Castries continued their activities in observance of Diabetes Awareness Month and observed International Diabetes Awareness Day with a Health Fair. The Fair was staged at the Blue Coral Mall located in the city center. The Nutrition Department of the Ministry of Health mounted an educational exhibition illustrating healthy and unhealthy breakfast. There were tastings of healthy drinks as alternatives to the regular drinks which they displayed showing the sugar content. They highlighted water as the most healthy option. The Bureau of Health Education Unit put on an exhibition with educational material, on diabetes, hypertension, cholesterol and dieting, general diabetes information and took advantage of the opportunity to share information on Ebola. The Community Nursing service conducted blood sugar and hypertension testing. This screening saw a record number of two-hundred and ninety-four (294)persons being screened and over three thousand persons who traverse through the mall were impacted.

The Lions and Leos together with the Diabetes and Hypertension Association provided support at the booth and counseling to visitors and promoting the slogan " healthy eating begins with breakfast". The Lions and Leos also continued the wear blue Fridays and today added the healthy breakfast dimension (Lions and Leos were required to eat a healthy breakfast, wear blue and take pictures to share).

The Lions and Leos of Castries wish to express gratitude to the many institutions and organizations who assisted in making this Diabetes Awareness Day activity the resounding Success that it was.
